What is the Birth Control Patch?
![]() |
The birth control patch is a thin square patch that sticks to the skin like a band aid. You replace the path each week on another part of your skin, not where you had it before. You do this for three weeks in a row skipping the week of menstruation. Then you place the patch on again beginning a new 3 week cycle. |
How does the Birth Control Patch Work?
The birth control patch is very similar to birth control pills in that it contains hormones and works to disrupt the normal fertility of a woman. The hormones are absorbed through the skin’s epidermis and into the blood stream. The purpose of the hormones is to regulate the reproductive system so that ovulation doesn’t occur. The patch is actually designed to be worn full-time even during bathing and swimming though caution is always recommended.
Side Effects of the Birth Control Patch
Because the patch contains synthetic hormones, like the pill, similar side effects can be experienced by women on the patch as those taking the pill. The more common side effects are weight gain, spotting in between periods, headaches and nausea in some. The birth control patch can also cause a small rash where it is placed on the skin. The birth control patch is a proven safe form of contraceptive, yet it isn't for everyone so discuss all your options with your Doctor.
